Review: Burgerville (Vancouver, WA)

Date of visit: July 17, 2010

I have been to Burgerville a few times over the years - it's never stood out as a "must have" burger joint, and my experiences have always been mixed, so I decided to give it another try using my criteria for the "perfect burger".

I ordered the Half Pound Colossal Burger (organic beef, american cheese, lettuce, tomato, Burgerville spread, ketchup, pickles on a sesame seed bun) and fries. You order at the counter, they give you a number and deliver it to your table. Both burger and fries were warm upon arrival, but not hot. The first sign of this was that the cheese wasn't melted, but not too concering considering I'm usually more focused on the taste.

I cut the burger in half to get a better sense of the burger/bun/condiment ratios, which were a little off. Generally speaking, I like all three components to be represented equally in each bite. The first bit yielded an excessive amount of ketchup and meat, with little sense that there were any other condiments on the burger but the ketchup. Don't get me wrong, I like ketchup, but I also like to taste the other condiments as well. The bun was your typical sesame seed, fast-food style bun which consistently seemed to buckle under the weight of the two 1/4 pound patties. I already had a sense that this might happen given there was a guy at the counter when we arrived who was complaining his bun was stale. The lettuce and tomatoes were fresh and the meat was exceptionally tasty, which wasn't a surprise given the fact that Burgerville markets its meat as "organic and sustainable". Without question, the meat was the best part of the burger - juicy and fresh.

The fries were reminiscent of McDonald's, in both taste and consistency. They were lightly salted and not at all greasy. I don't usually call out fries because the review is for the burger, but if you go to Burgerville, get them! They're damn good!
